If you are unable to stop a medication prior to testing, or if you have a question about one of your medications please call our office.
One (1) week before your skin testing appointment: loratadine (Claritin), cetirizine (Zyrtec), fexofenadine (Allegra), desloratadine (Clarinex) and levocetirizine (Xyzal).
Three (3) days before your skin testing appointment: Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which includes over the counter cough and cold medications containing diphenhydramine, and sleep aids such as Tylenol PM or Advil PM.
Two (2) days before your skin testing appointment: Antihistamine nasal sprays (azelastine, Astelin, Astepro, Patanase) and allergy eye drops (azelastine, olopatadine, tetrahydrozoline, naphazoline).
All types of inhalers can be continued. Steroid nasal sprays (such as Flonase, Nasacort, Rhinocort, Nasonex, Qnasl) can also be continued.
Many prescription medications also have antihistamine properties and can interfere with testing. These include some anti-depressants and anxiety medications (amitriptyline, quetiapine, doxepin, and imipramine, hydroxyzine) as well as some appetite stimulants like cyproheptadine (Periactin). Please consult with the prescribing doctor prior to stopping any medication.
Higher doses of certain stomach acid medications including cimetidine, famotidine and ranitidine can also suppress skin testing responses. Please avoid taking these for one (1) day before to your test.
